Supported File Types and Document Preparation
Updated July 24, 2026
Supported formats
- PDF — the best choice; multi-page PDFs are fully supported
- Images — JPG and PNG are converted to fax pages automatically
Don't have a file at all? Use the write a fax option and type your document directly in the browser editor — formatting, alignment, and fonts included.
Tips for a clean transmission
Fax is a monochrome medium at roughly 200 DPI, so a little preparation goes a long way:
- High contrast wins. Black text on a white background transmits perfectly; light gray text or pastel backgrounds can fade.
- Avoid tiny fonts. Anything under ~10pt may be hard to read on the receiving end.
- Scans: if you photograph a paper document, keep it flat, well-lit, and straight. Most phone scanner apps (or the iPhone Notes scanner) produce great input.
- Color is converted. Photos and colored charts are converted to grayscale halftones; fine color detail can be lost.
Page counting
The price is per page, and the page count you see in the preview is exactly what you're charged for. A 3-page PDF to the US costs 3 × $0.10 = $0.30.
Frequently asked questions
›Can I fax a Word document?
Export it to PDF first (File → Save As → PDF in Word or Google Docs), then upload the PDF.
›Can I combine multiple files into one fax?
The cleanest approach is to merge them into a single PDF before uploading, so they transmit as one document with one cover page.
›Will color documents work?
Yes, but fax is black-and-white — colors are converted to grayscale. High-contrast documents give the best results.
