Why Did My Fax Fail? Common Causes and Fixes

Fax failures are almost always about the receiving end. Here's what each situation means and what to do — remembering that every failed fax is automatically refunded to your balance.

Busy line

The receiving machine was on another call for every attempt. SendFax.me retries automatically, but a machine that's busy for hours (common at large clinics on Monday mornings) will eventually exhaust retries.

Fix: try again later, or schedule the fax for early morning at the destination.

No answer / not a fax line

The number rang but nothing answered with fax tones — often a voice line, a disconnected number, or a machine that's switched off.

Fix: double-check the number with the recipient. Verify you included the correct country code — a missing +1 or +44 sends your fax to a different continent.

Transmission errors mid-send

The connection dropped partway — usually poor line quality on old copper lines, or the receiving machine jamming/running out of paper.

Fix: retry; errors like this are often transient. If it keeps failing on a long document, try splitting it into smaller faxes.

The number is right but it never works

Some offices replace fax machines with fax services that reject certain routes, or the line has been silently disconnected.

Fix: confirm with the recipient that the fax number is still live — you'd be surprised how often it isn't.
