If you need to know how to fax to China from the US, the key is entering the recipient’s number in international format. For a mainland China landline, that means +86, the city code without its initial 0, then the local fax number. You can send from a browser without a fax machine, but first confirm that the number you were given is an actual fax line.

Format a mainland China fax number

China’s country calling code is +86. Within China, landline area codes are written with a leading 0, such as Beijing (010), Shanghai (021), and Guangzhou (020). For an international fax, omit that domestic 0. The Chinese government’s dialing guide gives these city-code examples and explains the international sequence; SendFax.me’s international-fax guidance likewise says to enter the country code followed by the number without the leading zero. (english.www.gov.cn)

Example: If a Beijing office gives you a domestic fax number written as `010 5555 0100`, enter it as `+86 10 5555 0100`. This is a format illustration, not a verified recipient number. For a Shanghai number written as `021 5555 0100`, the international form would begin `+86 21`, not `+86 021`.

A common mistake is adding the US exit code, `011`, to a number entered into an online fax form. That prefix is for dialing out from a US telephone line. In a web fax form that accepts international numbers, use the plus sign and country code, for example `+86`, and follow the service’s instructions. Don’t enter `011` as well unless the service specifically tells you to.

Mainland China and Hong Kong use different country codes. Mainland China uses +86, while Hong Kong uses +852. If the recipient is in Hong Kong, select and format that destination separately; don’t treat a Hong Kong number as a mainland China number. (itu.int)

Before you send, check the destination

A number that reaches a person by phone is not necessarily a fax number. Ask the recipient to confirm that the line accepts incoming faxes, and request the full international format if they have it. This is especially useful when faxing a business, hospital, legal office, insurer, or government department with multiple departments or fax lines.

Before uploading your file, check:

  • Recipient and department: Make sure the fax line belongs to the right office or team.
  • Number format: Confirm the +86 country code, city code, and local number. For a mainland landline, remove the domestic area-code 0.
  • Document: Use a legible PDF or image and check that every page is upright and complete.
  • Instructions: Follow any requested cover-page details, reference numbers, or page limits.
  • Deadline: Allow time to review the delivery report and respond if the recipient says the fax did not arrive.

For documents with personal or sensitive information, send only what the recipient needs and check their instructions for handling it. A cover page can help identify the intended recipient, but avoid adding unnecessary sensitive details to it.

Send a fax to China online in a browser

With SendFax.me, China is one of the supported destinations among 29 countries. To send from a computer or another device with a browser:

  1. Open SendFax.me and start a fax.
  2. Enter the destination in international format, such as `+86` followed by the mainland China number with the domestic area-code 0 removed.
  3. Upload your PDF or image. Review the document’s page order and readability before sending.
  4. Add a cover page if it helps the recipient route the document. If you need to complete or sign a document first, use the browser-based fill-and-sign option.
  5. Check the displayed country and per-page rate before you submit. The current pricing information lists China at $0.25 per page; the first page of your first fax is free, and longer documents pay for their remaining pages. Check the price shown for your fax before sending in case rates have changed. (sendfax.me)
  6. Send the fax, then review the delivery confirmation and transmission report. Keep the report with your records if you need to show when you sent the document.

SendFax.me uses pay-as-you-go, per-page pricing with no subscription. If you need help checking the destination format or understanding international rates, see the international faxing guide. You can create an account to send your document online.

If the fax does not go through

Don’t immediately assume the recipient’s machine is unavailable. Check the number again, especially whether you accidentally kept the leading 0 in the city code or included `011` in an online form. Confirm that you selected mainland China rather than Hong Kong, and ask the recipient to verify the fax number and line.

Also check the transmission report for the result, then review the uploaded file and any recipient instructions. If you resend, make sure the number and document are correct first. A successful transmission report is useful evidence that the sending system completed its transmission, but if the document is time-sensitive, contact the recipient to confirm they received and can read it.

A quick checklist for your next China fax

  • Use `+86` for mainland China, not `011` in a browser form.
  • Remove the initial 0 from a mainland landline city code, for example `010` becomes `10`.
  • Use `+852` for Hong Kong, not `+86`.
  • Verify the destination is a fax line and belongs to the intended office.
  • Preview the page count and displayed price before sending.
  • Save the transmission report and follow up with the recipient if receipt matters.
